January 25, 2010 - Who Gets the Credit?

For millions of Americans football is a passion.  Of special importance to gridiron fans are the numerous collegiate bowl games and the NFL playoffs that occur in December and January.  The culmination of any good drive is a touchdown.  Have you noticed there are several ways players celebrate a touchdown?  It seems more often than not the players are more interested in entertaining us with their unique dances, handshakes, gyrations, and acrobatic stunts than being real students of the game.  Most annoying to serious fans is the player who pats himself on the chest or points a finger at himself upon scoring for his team.  It’s as if he is saying “I’m the only one who accomplished this task.  I’m the greatest.”

It would be refreshing for a player to turn around and point to the linemen who placed the strategic blocks so he could score, or perhaps running up to each linemen and shaking there hands for a job well done.  Too often our ego gets in the way of recognizing who gave us the opportunity to succeed.

While God desires us to have a good self-image and to take delight in our successes we must remember that there are usually others involved in helping us reach our goals and accomplishing tasks.  God’s word tells us to take satisfaction (pride) in our efforts, "Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else." Galatians 6:4 (NLT)

Most of all, we need to give the glory to God.  The Apostle Paul stated, "Yet I dare not boast about anything except what Christ has done through me, bringing the Gentiles to God by my message and by the way I worked among them. They were convinced by the power of miraculous signs and wonders and by the power of God’s Spirit. In this way, I have fully presented the Good News of Christ from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum." Romans 15:18-19 (NLT)

The Psalmist reminds us that,"This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see." Psalm 118:23 (NLT) When we think about it, every idea we get, every dollar we earn, every relationship made ultimately comes from our Creator.  He can and does prosper us.

"It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow." 1 Corinthians 3:7 (NLT)

Next time you see someone taking all the credit, remind yourself to be thankful that you have a loving God who equipped you with the gifts, talents, and abilities you own.  Without His abiding love and mercies we would all still be dust.
