Men’s Ministry Best Practices: Avoiding Common Failures

A Pastor's Big Fear and How to Help Him Remove It

FEAR - "False Evidence Appearing Real"...does your pastor have the wrong idea about men's ministry? Does he think that by agreeing to do men's ministry HE will be overwhelmed? Not to worry...if you are passionate about growing men into more faithful followers of Christ, consider partnering with OCM and let us help you empower the men of your church to make men's ministry happen and RELIEVE your pastor's fear.

You have to understand your pastor (more about that in our Leadership Development article this month) and realize that he may see himself as a coach/advisor, or as a developer or as a deployer. If he sees himself as a developer or deployer, then he may view men's ministry as "one more thing" for him to do, and if he's like most pastors we know, he is already overwhelmed. So his resistance is up.

The power of a partner like OCM is the opportunity for lay leaders to get equipped so they can effectively do what needs to be done, thus freeing up the pastor to be an executive advisor. The tools we provide and the help we offer with structuring your men's ministry will take you a long way in relieving your pastor's fear.

If you are a senior pastor and you find yourself in the developer or deployer role, consider blessing and releasing the men who are stepping up to make men's ministry a reality at your church. Give them permission and the resources to equip themselves via an organization like OCM, and then let them help you encourage and inspire the men of your church. You will be glad you did.
