Men’s Ministry Best Practices: Avoiding Common Failures

Picking the Right Leaders

One of the common failure points we see in ministry to men is in the area of leadership. We'd like to offer you a profile of the type of men to be on the look out for as you build your leadership team and some questions to ask yourself along the way.

Most importantly, find Christ-centered men, ones who are sold out for Christ and in the word regularly.
They need passion for the brothers to sustain them during seasons when men may not be actively involved or connected. Look for men who believe and use the power of prayer and are true prayer warriors.

A question to ask yourself and your other leaders: what percentage of the work is being done by what percentage of the men? Do you have a clear understanding of your own and others' spiritual and physical gifts and skills (survey question number 7 & 8). Also, if balls are being dropped and things aren't moving as quickly as you'd like, or if everything keeps bouncing back to you as the leader, it may be time to look at what each leader can deliver. Are they really able to give 5-10 hours a month? Donut-eating is not a pre-requisite for being a men's council member!

Be willing to ask the hard questions and constantly evaluate, while being sensitive to each person's life circumstances.
