Leadership Development Ideas

It's Beyond You

If you've stepped into a leadership role in your men's ministry, there's something you should know. And if you've read Rick Warren's "Purpose-Driven Life" book, this idea will sound familiar (it's the first line of his book): it's not about you.

It's beyond you. You need to realize that your leadership assignment is for a season. God is at work in and through you to lead your team in whatever capacity He has called you to. And as you faithfully fulfill your calling, enter into ministry with a “Learn, Do, Teach Approach”. With this mentoring mindset, you will ensure that the ministry does not revolve around or rest on you, and that it will continue after you are no longer a part of it.

Learn: 2 Timothy 2:2 - "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others."

Do: 1 Timothy 4:7 - "Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly."

Teach: Titus 2:15 - "These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you."

Build a solid foundation in your leadership team and think about your legacy. Be on a regular look out for planners and organizers who are coachable and can rotate in to openings as they occur.

As you serve, be sure that you and those who are serving in leadership know when their term is over. People are often hesitant to sign up for ministry in church because they think once they sign up it is for life! Men in particular value knowing the start and end date expectations. Within 90 days of your end date, find your replacement who should have council and pastoral approval. In this way, you ensure many men have opportunities to serve, you avoid burn-out, and you build a legacy that is beyond you.
