Leadership Development Ideas - The Art of Self Leadership
(Reflections from "Courageous Leadership" by Bill Hybels)
Bill Hybels believes that for a man to lead well, he must realize that his toughest leadership challenge doesn’t lie in leading others, but in leading himself. Hybels has developed a number of questions that leaders can periodically ask of themselves to make sure they are effectively leading themselves:
- Is my calling sure? Every believer has a calling to which they need to surrender, making themselves completely available to God. Are you functioning within the area of your calling?
- Is my vision clear? How can you lead people into the future if your picture of the future is fuzzy? Leaders need to have a picture of the future they believe God has given them, what they are going to do, why they are going to do it, and how they are going to do it.
- Is my passion hot? It’s the leader’s responsibility to keep his passion for his ministry fired-up. A leader’s passion needs to be ‘white-hot’ before he can expect others to catch it.
- Am I developing my gifts? Leaders must know which gifts they’ve been given and in what order. They need to continually sharpen those gifts and recruit others to fill in those areas that they are not gifted in.
- Is my character submitted to Christ? Followers will only trust leaders who exhibit the highest levels of integrity. Every time you compromise character you compromise leadership.
- Is my pride subdued? Pride precedes a fall. Period.
- Am I overcoming fear? Fear can immobilize a leader. It’s deadly. It’s a leader’s job to deal with fear so it doesn’t sabotage his mission.
- Is my love for God and people increasing? How’s your heart? Leading others shouldn’t diminish your compassion for others, but increase it.
