Church Spotlight
First Baptist Church - Castro Valley, CA
FBC in Castro Valley, CA continues to excel in creativity. This past month they developed and provided a unique sports outreach event that was deemed a huge success in terms impact.
Led by Don Christiansen, Taff Vidales and pastor Don Ott, this "Ironman Decathalon" event included activities such as ping pong, putting, air rifle marksmanship, casting, football throw, frozen Cornish game hen shotput, and the like that appealed to men with a broad range of ages and skill level.
This Decathalon event included a BBQ and a short address from Jim Grassi to close up the outreach portion of the event. The Olympics theme song played as the contestants entered the church auditorium to listen to the address and receive their awards.
The leadership team had put the pre-registered participants into teams so as to mix age and skill ability, allowing each team to excel in certain areas. Medals were awarded for each category, along with “special” medals for those who provided some entertaining moments, not necessarily with any resemblance of skill! The awards for the three best teams were given bronze, silver and gold medals. A minor entry fee was charged to cover costs.
To add to the fun, each team was assigned a name and logo that represented tribes of Israel and characters from the Bible. For example the “Reuben” team had a logo of a reuben sandwich. Participants really enjoyed the event as there was a great mixture of ages, occupations and skill levels. About 30% of those who attended were new to FBC.
MMC provided them with its latest Post-Event evaluation tool to help them assess and recap the event.
