Men’s Ministry Best Practices: Avoiding Common Failures
Pillar 2: Beware of Becoming too "Event-Based"
It is tempting to view men's ministry as a series of events on a church calendar. And with such a temptation, we have seen many churches become too "event-based." And men's events can be quite a resource drain. It can be easy to confuse hosting an event with making a difference in a guy's life. That's why it is always important to ask the question, "with what we're doing - are men being transformed?"
If you're going to avoid this common failure, we encourage you to keep what you're doing intentional - is there a spiritual objective to the event? Are the brothers getting fed spiritually? Are you being intentional about building relationships, not just ensuring guys have a good time?
We know it takes a lot of resources to execute a successful event. A variety of resources and skill sets are required to do the "pre-", "during-", and "post-event" components that we recommend well. And if you have a limited volunteer base, you have to be careful not to drain them with too many events. Therefore, with limited resources you must be even more clear about your objectives than you may otherwise be.
Strive for balance. You need enough larger events to provide entry points that expose the average guy to spirittual things because they can't handle the intimacy of a small group. And without a men's event now and then, there is no rallying cry for men to step up and get engaged. At the same time, we encourage you to provide substance, and continue to ask the question, "are men encountering Jesus and being transformed?"
