Appreciating Your Volunteers

Let's face it: most of church activities happen with volunteers. There is not enough time in the day for your pastoral and church administrative staff to plan and execute every discipleship and outreach activity your church offers. So it's important that as your ministry to men continues, you not take your volunteers for granted.

If your ministry to the men in your church and community is to permeate with the love of Christ, the guys helping you plan and execute all aspects of each program area must feel loved and appreciated. You can put some simple systems in place to help you regularly and efficiently love on them. Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • Create a sign-up sheet with a place for name, address, phone and email at each event for the volunteers and require that they fill it in as they arrive
  • Have your team lead or designated follow-up person, contact each one within 72 hours of volunteering with a phone call and an email to say thank you
  • Have your men's ministry leader or program area leader take his team to breakfast or lunch a few times a year

As these men serve side-by-side on a regular basis, you may even be able to integrate their volunteering into a men's small group by encouraging them to meet 30 minutes in advance of serving to share and pray for one another. The chance of success for this small group is high since they are like-minded in their serving.
