Men’s Ministry Best Practices: Avoiding Common Failures

Programs: What Turns Men Off

Pillar 4 in our ministry model addresses the programs that need to focus on two areas: growing the men in your church and reaching out to the community. Make sure you sidestep program failure by knowing what turns men off about them.

Your programs must have a clear goal and a return on the investment a man makes in it. If the event or program is just about getting men together, they will not keep coming back, and they certainly won't bring their friends! Communicate the event's purpose (why guys would want to come), and if it is an ongoing program, what you hope the men will accomplish by participating.

Tell them what the result will be if they invest their time and money. And best yet, use a visual format, not lots of words. In Murrow's article this month he mentions that Saddleback uses a baseball diamond to show their discipleship process and another church uses a mountain with the goal of reaching the summit. Think in these terms and men will get more involved.
