Men’s Ministry Best Practices: Avoiding Common Failures

Pillar 4: Keep an Outward Focus

If your men's ministry has been in existence for awhile, chances are each event is becoming one more way for the brothers to get together. It takes effort to regularly ensure that each event and gathering is open to newcomers and that your men's ministry is looking outward for ways to be an encouragement to those beyond the walls of your church.

One way to keep an outward focus is to ask your pastor what service opportunities exist in your community. Perhaps other people in your congregation have started building relationships with the crisis pregnancy center, homeless shelters, halfway houses, etc. Your pastor may be able to connect you with these folks. And most senior pastors hear about additional service opportunities but don't have the bandwidth to get involved. Your inquiry and initiative may just be the answer to someone's prayer.

Consider where your men can serve or provide support on a biannual basis. There may even be a chance to partner with other churches in the community - what a great reconciliation opportunity and witness of unity. Imagine the men of your church initiating the reach across denominational lines to serve the one true God. How powerful would that be?
